Description

1947 Maple Leaf Canada 1-cent Extra Fine (EF-40)

The initial obverse (from 1937-1947) bore a legend containing the Latin abbreviation "ET IND:IMP:", indicating that the King was the Emperor of India. The granting of independence to India resulted in a problem from the Royal Canadian Mint during the early part of 1948. New obverse coinage tools with "ET IND:IMP:" omitted would not arrive for several months, yet there was a pressing need for all denominations of coins. The mint satisfied this demand by striking coins dated 1947 and bearing an obverse with outmoded titles. To differentiate this issue from the regular strikings of 1947, a tiny maple leaf was placed after the date.

Uncrowned Portrait, "ET IND:IMP:" Obverse Legend, Maple Twig Design (1937-1947)
