The first release in the new Australian Antarctic Territory Series highlights the emperor penguin. This 2023 coin holds a limited mintage of 25,000 coins. Emperor penguins are the tallest and heaviest of all living penguin species. Their diet consists primarily of fish. Emperors are endemic to Antarctica, including the Australian Antarctic Territory. Emperor penguins were once regarded as a species of least concern, and are now classed as near threatened due to declining food availability from climate change and commercial fishing.

The reverse of this 1oz coin depicts a family of emperor penguin family standing on ice and diving into the water. The obverse features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the face value.
