Description

2001 $200 "Cornelius Krieghoff" Gold Coin

The 2001 $200 gold coin is the first in a four-coin series featuring Canadian art and artists. Cornelius Krieghoff's famous painting The Habitant Farm, (1856) is featured on the reverse.

The habitant population of Quebec is a recurring theme in the work of many painters from that province. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the term "habitants" referred to landowners who farmed properties in New France. But by the end of the 18th century, it referred to those who lived in rural areas and made a living working on the land, regardless of if they owned it or not.

One prominent painter who frequently used images of habitants was Cornelius Krieghoff (1815-1872). The Royal Canadian Mint has honoured Canadian artists with a series of coins featuring their work. The first in the series, this $200 Cornelius Krieghoff 22k Gold Commemorative, features a recreation of that artist's The Habitant Farm. As such, this coin is a perfect find for any collector inspired by a golden memory out of artistic history.
