Description

2000 14KT $100 "150th Anniversary, Search for Northwest Passage" Coin

The Franklin Expedition, which was lost on its voyage to discover a Northwest passage to the far east, is commemorated on the gold coin for 2000.

In May 1845, Sir John Franklin, a celebrated British explorer as well as naval officer took up the quest to discover a route between the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans through the Arctic waters. Through the orders of the British Admiralty, Franklin and his crew of 133 individuals sailed in two massive naval vessels. Unfortunately, they were lost in their voyage and were never able to finish their quest to find a route through the Arctic waters. Despite this, Sir John Franklin's bravery is remembered in this 50th Anniversary Search for the Northwest Passage 14-karat Gold $100 Coin. This beautiful coin comes presented in a keepsake box from the Royal Canadian Mint.
