1999 Nunavut 22KT $2 Commemorative Gold Coin
This coin commemorates the formation of Nunavut, Canada's third territory, in 1999. The design honours a native drum dance.
Drumming is one of the most traditional and oldest forms of Inuit music as well as performance. It is the focal point of gatherings and plays a key role in Nunavut social and spiritual life. Drumming is particularly essential in Inuit spiritual life as they believe solemn beats and hypnotic rhythms aid shamans into trances which allow them to communicate with the spirit world. Culturally, its importance goes far beyond entertainment to reflect and express the values of the society. The image presented on the reverse side of this coin depicts an Inuit drum dance. The drum signifies that the people will be heard near and far and features a map outlining Nunavut. Inside the map is a kudliq, a stone lamp that serves as a source of warmth and provides a sense of security.
This beautiful 1999 Canada $2 22k Nunavut Commemorative Gold Coin commemorates the formation of Nunavut and the traditions of its people. This coin comes presented in a clamshell box from the Royal Canadian Mint and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity.
