2012 Canada Gold Maple Leaf Set - 5th Ann. RCM Million Dollar (No Tax)

The world's first million-dollar coin celebrates its fifth anniversary
In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint released the largest legal tender coin in the world. This amazing piece had a face value of one million Canadian dollars, was more than fifty centimeters (twenty inches) in diameter and nearly three centimeters (one inch) thick, was composed of 99.999 percent gold, and weighed 220 pounds (100 kilograms).

The first coin was produced as a showpiece to promote the inaugural launch of the Royal Canadian Mint's line of 99.999 pure one-ounce Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins. But when collectors heard about the spectacular million-dollar coin, several buyers came forward requesting one of their own. In response, the Mint created a very limited number of million-dollar pieces featuring a beautiful cluster of iconic maple leaves by the Mint artist and senior engraver Stan Witten on the reverse, the celebrated effigy of Queen Elizabeth by Canadian portrait artist Susanna Blunt on the obverse, and graceful 12-sided inner edges that recall Canadian currency from years gone by. Each coin took approximately 8 to 10 weeks to produce.

The million-dollar coin was certified by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's largest gold coin. Its obverse image of Queen Elizabeth is also the world's largest in pure gold. The coin's highly refined purity is also exceptional. At 99.999% pure gold, the coins each contain a total of less than ten parts per million of other metallic elements.

In 2012, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates the fifth anniversary of this exceptional world record-holding creation with this five-coin fractional gold set.
