The Common Loon is one of the signature sights and sounds of the great Canadian wilderness. This beautiful black-and-white aquatic bird is a powerful swimmer capable of diving up to 80 m with large webbed feet and numerous bones that are solid rather than hollow to help it reach such depths. Loon chicks can swim right away but will spend time on their parents backs to rest, keep warm and to avoid predators lurking in or around the water.
