1951 Canada 5-cents Circulated
The Korean War placed strong demand on nickel, forcing termination of production of the commemorative nickel 5-cent piece before the end of 1951. In it's place, steel coins of the bever design were struck. It was found during trials that the beaver design was not as easy to strike in steel as in nickel, so new, lower relief coinage tools were prepared for both the obverse and reverse. By mistake, a High Relief obverse die was used to strike a small proportion of the 1951 steel coinage, resulting in two varieties for the year. Aside from the difference in relief, the High and Low relief obverses differ in the position of the last A of "GRATIA" relative to the rim denticles. On the HIgh Relief variety, the "A" points to a rim denticle, while on the Low Relief variety, it points between denticles.
