Description

1858 Small Date Canada 5-cents Very Good (VG-8)

Small Date Variety: Only one matrix has been identified for the Province of Canada five cents of 1858, which carried the Small Date. When the decision was made to increase the font size of the date on the Canada 5-cents from small to large, and so as to not cause the small date working dies to become obsolete, a large date four numeral gang punch was produced to overstamp the remaining small date working dies. With a new large date, this produced three large over small date varieties.

Victoria Portrait Obverse 1:
Strand of Hair Detail: Just to the right of the Queen's eye is a thick, truncated strand with two very thin strands rising to the brow.
Eye Detail: The upper eyelid is thin with little definition towards the corner of the eye. The lower lid loses definition approaching the corner.
Lips and Chin Detail: Protruding upper lip with a pronounced curl. The chin is round and smooth to the neck.
Dates: Portrait Obverse 1 is currently known on the 1858 and 1870 Wide Rim 5-cents.
