Victory in Europe Day celebrates the formal acceptance of Germany's surrender by the Allies on Tuesday, May 8, 1945, bringing the Second World War in Europe to a close. Countries such a Russia, Belarus, and Israel observe VE Day (known as Victory Over Fascism Day, Liberation Day, or Victory Day in some countries) on May 9th, as it was already May 9 in those countries when the surrender was accepted.
