2021 Canada 100th Anniversary of the Discovery of Insulin Commemorative Collector Keepsake Card
In 2021 Canada’s $2 circulation coin commemorates the 100th anniversary of one of Canada’s greatest contributions to medical research the discovery of insulin.
Insulin was discovered by Sir Frederick G. Banting, Charles H. Best, and JJR Macleod at the University of Toronto in 1921. Prior to 1921, it was uncommon for a person with type 1 diabetes to live for more than a year or two. By May of 1922, insulin was produced on a mass scale, with Eli Lilly becoming the first manufacturer to mass produce insulin. In October of 1923, Banting and Macleod were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. Insulin remains the only effective treatment for people with type one diabetes today.
Two different versions of the $2 Discovery of Insulin circulation coin are included in this seven-piece keepsake set: a selectively coloured piece and a non-coloured one. Packaged alongside five other denominations issued in 2021, these uncirculated coins come ready to view and display in a collector card, with colourful visuals to help explain the importance of this Canadian medical breakthrough that changed the world.

Blue is the colour that globally represents diabetes awareness.
