2017 Niue $2 Battles that Changed History - Battle of Yorktown Silver (TAX Exempt)
In the fall of 1781, General George Washington's forces, supported by the French army and navy, besieged General Lord Charles Cornwallis' veteran British army - dug in at Yorktown, Virginia. The Battle of Yorktown proved to be the last major land battle of the American Revolutionary War.
After bombardment, both day and night, from cannon and artillery, the British situation began to deteriorate rapidly and Cornwallis surrendered on 17 October.
Replacing Cornwallis' captured army was a questionable proposition for the British. With support for the war eroded, peace negotiations began the following year. The Treaty of Paris was signed in 1783 and formally brought an end to the Revolutionary War and established the United States as a free and independent country.
In 1789 George Washington became the first President of the United States.
