2017 Tuvalu Polar Babies - Polar Bear Silver Proof Coin (TAX Exempt)
The Polar Babies series features five 1/2oz silver proof coins struck from 99.99% pure silver. The series comprises a polar bear, emperor penguin, harp seal, sea otter and an arctic fox coin. This sea bear evolved about 200,000 years ago from its brown bear ancestors and is superbly adapted for survival in the Arctic. Five nations host polar bear populations including the United States (Alaska), Canada, Russia, Greenland, and Norway.
The first coin in the new Polar Babies series features a gorgeous polar bear cub.
The polar bear is easily recognized by its distinctive shape, from its round posterior to its pointed black nose. Although the bear's fur looks white, each hair shaft is actually pigment-free and transparent with a hollow core that scatters and reflects visible light, much like what happens with ice and snow. The coin is struck from 1/2oz of 99.99% pure silver in proof quality.
The coin's reverse features a polar bear cub in the snow. The inscription POLAR BEAR, and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark, also appear in the design.
Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Government of Tuvalu, the coin's obverse depicts the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2017 year-date, and the monetary denomination.
The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of the Polar Babies - Polar Bear 2017 1/2oz Silver Proof Coin.
Displayed in a classic presentation case, the coin is delivered in a delightful coloured shipper and is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
