Description

2012 Canada $4 Heroes of 1812 - Tecumseh Fine Silver (No Tax).

The War of 1812 was a fundamental turning point in Canada's development as a nation; the stories and the heroes that arose from it have become enduring elements of the Canadian story. The strategic prowess and bravery of Tecumseh during the War of 1812-in which he offered the ultimate sacrifice, his life-have made him one of the war's most well-known figures.

This $4 coin is 99.99% pure silver with a metal weight of 7.96 grams and a diameter of 27 millimetres. The reverse image by Bonnie Ross features, in the foreground, a three-quarter profile bust of Tecumseh in his characteristic fringed buckskin jacket.

Around his neck he wears the King George III peace medal he was given by officials in Upper Canada and which he is said to have worn constantly, including in the final battle that took his life: the Battle of the Thames on October 5, 1813. Around his head he wears a buckskin bandana adorned with a single feather. In his left ear and in his nose are decorative rings. Tecumseh's portrait is set against an intricately engraved background comprised of the bilingual text "The War of 1812/La guerre de 1812."

This background is horizontally bisected by a polished silver band featuring the engraved word "Tecumseh" in cursive lettering. Beneath this band is the engraved and painted Government of Canada War of 1812 logo composed of the date "1812" in 1812-style handwritten lettering laid over a red stylized maple leaf with ecru swords crossing behind it. The reverse is also engraved with the face value of "4 DOLLARS." The obverse features the word "CANADA," the date "2012," and the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
