History of
Collecting Coins
Welcome to the exciting world of numismatics!
Numismatics is defined as the study of coins, paper money, tokens and other related
monetary items. Until the last 50 years, there were only limited resources for collectors
of Canadian coins.
The current price guides were either non-existent, or in their infancy.
Coin clubs existed only in the largest cities, coin dealers were few in numbers, and
correspondence between collectors was minimal.
Since the late 1940s, however, there have
been significant advancements in the hobby. In 1950, the Canadian Numismatic Association
was founded, and the first "Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins" by J.E.
Charlton was published in 1952.
The 1950s and 1960s saw the establishment of hundreds of
coin clubs across Canada. There is a club or organization in most major towns and cities.
Today, there are numerous catalogues, price guides, and periodicals devoted to Canadian
numismatics.
