Introduced as a cost-saving measure in 1987, the new coin was nicknamed the "loonie" by Canadians, thanks to the lovely loon design created by well-known wildlife artist, Robert-Ralph Carmichael.

2005 Two Dollar Coin First Day Cover
The two-dollar coin was first introduced in 1996 to replace the two-dollar bill. This coin features an outer ring of nickel and an inner core of aluminum bronze in a distinctive bi-metallic coin-locking mechanism patented by the Royal Canadian Mint.
